This was a big week in City Council, where we finally voted to remove the carve-outs in our Welcoming City ordinance and end all collaboration between Chicago police and federal immigration enforcement.
It’s important to recognize it as a huge victory for grassroots movements: one that reminds us that when we fight, we win. You can read some background on this fight, along with other City Council updates, below.
I also want to share with you updates about the progress to vaccinate Chicagoans and 33rd ward residents against Covid-19.
Last week, Chicago began phase 1b of its vaccine rollout, which includes residents 65+ and specific groups of highest-risk and front-line essential workers. We are working with the public health department to ensure that all residents of senior buildings in our ward are vaccinated, and there are several vaccination locations at Walgreen’s pharmacies and clinics in or near our ward.
It’s important to stress that the city’s vaccine supply from the federal government is still very limited, and even once you become eligible, it may take a number of weeks to get an appointment. The vaccine will be offered at no cost to all Chicagoans who want it, but patience is needed while vaccine quantities increase.
At present, the best way to receive updates about vaccine eligibility is to register with Chi Covid coach and review the city’s list of current options for vaccinations through healthcare providers, pharmacies, or employers.

Vaccination Updates

The city expects it to take at least through February and March for people in these groups to get their first dose of vaccine because of limited supply.
We are currently working with the public health department to ensure that all residents of senior buildings in our ward are vaccinated, and there are several vaccination locations at Walgreen’s pharmacies and clinics in or near our ward.

Free 33rd Ward Testing Feb. 6
Join us on Saturday, February 6 from 10:00am-12:30pm for free Covid-19 testing, HIV testing and narcan training for community members to learn how to save a life from an opioid overdose.
This event is a same-day registration event so please remember to bring a pen, an ID, and an insurance card (if you have one- not required).
Please help us invite neighbors who maybe be interested via the Facebook event. We are also looking for volunteers to help us with traffic/directing people to the testing/training areas. If you or anyone you know is interested in volunteering, please send a message to info@33rdward.org.

Testing Options
The City’s community-based testing sites remain open to all people living in Chicago, regardless of insurance or immigration status. You’re encouraged to register in advance at http://chicagocovidtesting.com/.
If there aren’t any available time slots, you can use this interactive testing map to locate other testing sites nearby. There are a number of options in or near the 33rd ward:

City Council Updates
Welcoming Cities Ordinance
For years, undocumented organizers have been telling us for years that Chicago is not a true sanctuary city. Five years ago, a coalition of immigrant rights groups came together at the policy level to document the consequences of ongoing collaboration between police and ICE—in one case, police handed over to ICE the information of an undocumented neighbor who had been the *victim* of a shooting, leading to his violent arrest and detention.
From the start, my colleague Carlos Ramirez-Rosa backed these efforts to remove all carve-outs in the Welcoming City ordinance. Along with my 22nd ward colleague Mike Rodriguez, it’s been my honor to help push these efforts forward since taking office, culminating in the first-ever meeting of our new committee on immigrant & refugee rights last week, and vote this week to make Chicago safer and more welcoming for our undocumented neighbors.
Water for All
We also introduced to City Council this week “Water for All,” another important ordinance that came out of our partnerships with movements. This ordinance would address water affordability, ensures transparency from the Department of Water Management, and bans water shut-offs as a means to extract payment from the 14 percent of Chicago residents who can’t afford their water bills. During the winter months, it’s important for property owners to keep sidewalks clear for everyone’s health and safety. But this can be difficult for seniors and neighbors with disabilities. If you could use a hand with shoveling, or can offer one, sign up for our shoveling assistance and volunteer network.
Emergency Heating Repair Assistance
The City of Chicago’s Emergency Heating Repair Program is now accepting applications until April 1, 2021!
This program offers a one-time grant to income-eligible homeowners to repair or replace furnaces/boiler systems in a residential property with 4 units or less.
To apply, you must fill out an online application packet, or request one to be sent to you by calling 311 or logging on to the CHI311 phone application
Gas Bill Assistance If you are struggling with your gas bill, you may qualify for assistance. To check your eligibility or apply, call CEDA at 800-571-2332.

Community Zoning Meeting Feb. 8

Free Tax Prep Help Now Available
Tax Prep Chicago Appointments begin January 25! Get help with preparing your taxes starting January 25 through mid-April. Trained volunteers can assist you in preparing and filing your Illinois and Federal Tax Returns and help you find out if you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and other tax credits! Families earning up to $57,000 a year and individuals earning $30,000 annually will qualify for this free service. You can register online or call 311 to set up an appointment. Our office staff is also available to help.

Tuvimos fue una gran semana en el Concejo Municipal, donde finalmente votamos para eliminar las excepciones en nuestra ordenanza de la Ciudad Acogedora y poner fin a toda colaboración entre la policía de Chicago y las autoridades federales de inmigración.
Quería compartir con ustedes algunos antecedentes sobre cómo sucedió esto, porque es importante reconocerlo como una gran victoria para los movimientos de base.
Los organizadores indocumentados nos han estado diciendo durante años que Chicago no es una verdadera ciudad santuario. Hace cinco años, una coalición de grupos de derechos migratorios se unió a nivel de políticas para documentar las consecuencias de la colaboración continua entre la policía y el ICE; en un caso, la policía entregó a ICE la información de un vecino indocumentado que había sido la * víctima * de un tiroteo, que condujo a su arresto y detención violentos.

Recibir Ayuda con Palear la Nieve en el distrito 33
Durante los meses de invierno, es importante que los propietarios mantengan las aceras despejadas para la salud y seguridad de todos.
