With dangerously cold weather headed our way this weekend, I want to share some important information and reminders.
Streets and Sanitation crews have been out treating our neighborhood streets since 4 AM this morning, but road salt breaks down ice and snow much more slowly when the temperatures drop this low. If you are driving, please exercise caution. You can use the snow plow tracker to check if your street has been plowed, or request additional salt using 311.
Unfortunately, due to the extreme temperatures, we have had to postpone our walk-up Covid-19 testing event tomorrow. We will be rescheduling as soon as weather permits.
This weekend’s weather will be especially dangerous for unhoused members of our community. In addition to warming centers operated by the city, the closest one of which is North Area Community Center at 845 W Wilson, Chicago Union of the Homeless is keeping an updated map of sites that are providing warming centers and supplies this weekend. You can check the map here.
Finally, we are continuing to work with our wonderful ward superintendent, Alejandro, and ward volunteers to help with sidewalk shoveling for our elderly and disabled neighbors. If you need help, or can give help, please sign up here.

Participatory Budgeting Results
The results are in! 33rd Ward residents have voted on how to spend the 2021 aldermanic menu funds for ward infrastructure projects. We are one of nine wards citywide that uses this neighbor-driven process to identify improvements desired by the community and decide democratically which ones we want to prioritize funding.
This was the second-ever year of participatory budgeting in the 33rd ward, and we want to give a huge thank you to the volunteers who form our PB Committee.

33rd Ward Testing Event CANCELLED
Unfortunately, due to the extreme temperatures, we have had to postpone our walk-up Covid-19 testing event tomorrow. We will be rescheduling as soon as weather permits.
Celebrating the Super Bowl Safely
We are seeing a decline in new cases of Covid-19 right now from the late-fall peak, but we’re still well above where we were this summer. To avoid going backwards, it’s important not to let our guard down. If you plan to watch the SuperBowl this weekend, you’re strongly encouraged not to gather with those from outside you household. Please remember that according to current city safety protocols, all non-essential indoor gatherings must be limited to ten people or fewer.
Vaccination Updates
More than 234,000 doses of vaccine have been administered to Chicagoans to date.
Chicago is still in phase 1b of its vaccine rollout, which includes residents 65+ and specific groups of highest-risk and front-line essential workers. The city expects it to take at least through February and March for people in these groups to get their first dose of vaccine because of limited supply. We are working with the public health department to ensure that all residents of senior buildings in our ward are vaccinated.
Chicago’s vaccine supply from the federal government remains limited, and we know that many people have experienced confusion and frustration trying to navigate multiple different scheduling systems.
The city’s health department has partnered with Zocdoc to create a more centralized platform where people can check for and schedule vaccination appointments when they’re available. You can view available appointments through Zocdoc at zocdoc.com/vaccine.

Testing Options
The City’s community-based testing sites remain open to all people living in Chicago, regardless of insurance or immigration status. You’re encouraged to register in advance at http://chicagocovidtesting.com/.
If there aren’t any available time slots, you can use this interactive testing map to locate other testing sites nearby. There are a number of options in or near the 33rd ward:

2. Pharmacy One, 4751 N. Kedzie Ave, 2nd Floor. Schedule an appointment via email or their Facebook page. pharmacyone@curishealthcare.org.

Extreme-Cold Preparedness
33rd Ward Snow Shoveling Assistance & Volunteer Program
During the winter months, it’s important for property owners to keep sidewalks clear for everyone’s health and safety. But this can be difficult for seniors and neighbors with disabilities. If you could use a hand with shoveling, or can offer one, sign up for our shoveling assistance and volunteer network.
Dangerously Cold Temperatures
An extended period of dangerous cold temperatures is expected through next week. Please take precautions to limit time outdoors, dress warmly and prepare your building for bitter cold.If you live in a rental unit, the city’s Residential Heat Ordinance requires your landlord to keep the temperature inside your unit at least 68 degrees from 8:30am to 10:30pm, and at least 66 degrees from 10:30pm to 8:30am between Sept. 15 and June 1. Call 311 or contact our office if your building is not meeting this threshold.
City warming centers are available at the city’s six community service centers for those who need a safe place to stay warm during cold weather.
Emergency Heating Repair Assistance
The City of Chicago’s Emergency Heating Repair Program is now accepting applications until April 1, 2021!
This program offers a one-time grant to income-eligible homeowners to repair or replace furnaces/boiler systems in a residential property with 4 units or less.
To apply, you must fill out an online application packet, or request one to be sent to you by calling 311 or logging on to the CHI311 phone application
Gas Bill Assistance If you are struggling with your gas bill, you may qualify for assistance. To check your eligibility or apply, call CEDA at 800-571-2332.
Vote for Your Favorite Local Business by Feb. 7!
It’s time for the annual business awards! Thank you to the dozen local community groups for nominating small businesses in 17 categories across North River Commission’s service area to create the slate for our annual “Best Businesses” awards for 2020!

With your vote in 17 categories, 17 small businesses will take home the 2020 award in their respected category. The poll closes on Sunday, Feb. 7.
Community Zoning Meeting Feb. 8
We invite you to attend a Virtual Public Community Meeting for the development project requesting rezoning at 3059-61 N Washtenaw Ave on February 8th, 2021 at 5pm.
As part of our Community Driven Zoning & Development (CDZD) process, this meeting is an opportunity for community members to hear directly from the developer, ask questions about the project, and provide feedback for the developer to consider. CDZD is the mechanism for the community to express concerns or desires for zoning changes and development in the ward. At this meeting, community will hear from the developer, have a chance to ask questions about the project, and submit feedback.

Con un clima peligrosamente frío en camino este fin de semana, quiero compartir información y recordatorios importantes.
Los equipos de Calles y Saneamiento han estado tratando las calles de nuestro vecindario desde las 4 de la mañana de hoy, pero la sal de la carretera rompe el hielo y la nieve mucho más lentamente cuando las temperaturas están bajas. Si está conduciendo, por favor tenga cuidado.

Resultados de Presupuesto 2021
¡Los resultados ya están! Los residentes del 33rd Ward han votado sobre cómo gastar los fondos del menú de concejales de 2021 para proyectos de infraestructura del barrio. Somos uno de los nueve distritos de la ciudad que utiliza este proceso impulsado por los vecinos para identificar las mejoras deseadas por la comunidad y decidir democráticamente a cuáles queremos dar prioridad a la financiación. Este fue el segundo año de elaboración de presupuestos participativos en el distrito 33 y queremos agradecer enormemente a los voluntarios que forman nuestro Comité de PB.
Recibir Ayuda con Palear la Nieve en el distrito 33
Durante los meses de invierno, es importante que los propietarios mantengan las aceras despejadas para la salud y seguridad de todos. Pero esto puede ser difícil para las personas mayores y los vecinos con discapacidades. Si puede usar una mano para palear, o puede ofrecer una, regístrese en nuestra red de voluntarios y asistencia para palear.
Se espera un período prolongado de temperaturas frías peligrosas hasta la próxima semana. Por favor, tome precauciones para limitar el tiempo al aire libre, vístase abrigado y prepare su edificio para el frío intenso. Actualizaciones de vacunas
