ComEd has built a new facility and will be demolishing their old facility on the corner of California and Addison. The project will be completed in stages and will take important precautions to avoid issues with dust and any other nuisances to the community. This week, ComEd sent out a letter informing over 1,000 residents nearby of the demolition.

Why is ComEd Demolishing the ComEd Chicago North Building?
ComEd is preparing to demolish the old Chicago North Headquarters facility at 3500 N. California Ave. in (at the corner of Addison Street & California Avenue) as part of a larger redevelopment that is enhancing the property’s community appeal with our new building on Roscoe Street & California Avenue.
When will demolition take place?
Project work hours will typically be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., a timeframe allowed by, but more limited than, City of Chicago requirements. The project is expected to start Tuesday, Aug. 18, and the overall project will last until approximately December 2020.
How will they complete the demolition?
Demolition will be completed using hydraulic excavators (e.g., Caterpillar 329, Caterpillar 349 and Volvo 750). No implosion methods will be used.
What protective measures will ComEd take throughout the demolition?
- Air Control: Dust suppression measures will be used throughout the demolition. Air quality will be monitored along the construction boundaries to protect neighboring residents and businesses.
- Traffic Control Measures: Trucks will be staged onsite and not allowed to stage on adjacent streets. Route selection has been made to minimize impact on traffic along North California Avenue and West Addison Street. No trucks will be allowed to use residential side streets.
- Access Control: Public access to the work zone will be restricted using a perimeter fence to prevent pedestrians from getting too close, and a gate will be placed off of California Avenue.
