We have just wrapped a special Friday afternoon City Council meeting where we passed an ordinance appropriating $377 million in federal dollars for Covid-19 relief. I voted in favor of this ordinance, which includes approximately $79 million for emergency rental assistance, $23 million for vaccination, and $155 million for the Chicago Department of Public Health. However, I remain extremely concerned that the city’s administration opted to spend more than $280 million of Chicago's CARES Act dollars on the police department–that’s more than 60% of the discretionary funds that Chicago got from the federal government for our Covid-19 response in 2020.Continue

I hope that you have been staying safe and warm this week, as we emerge out of the worst cold snap we've had in years.  Our superintendent, Alejandro, has been working 16-hour shifts with streets and sanitation teams to get our streets clear and passable again. We've gotten questions from a number of neighbors about plowing in alleys. In order to avoid damage to cars and properties, snow cars do not clear alleys, but streets and san has been sending garbage trucks to create tracks through alleys. If this has not yet happened in your alley, you can request itContinue

With dangerously cold weather headed our way this weekend, I want to share some important information and reminders.Streets and Sanitation crews have been out treating our neighborhood streets since 4 AM this morning, but road salt breaks down ice and snow much more slowly when the temperatures drop this low. If you are driving, please exercise caution. You can use the snow plow tracker to check if your street has been plowed, or request additional salt using 311. Unfortunately, due to the extreme temperatures, we have had to postpone our walk-up Covid-19 testing event tomorrow. We will be rescheduling as soon asContinue

This was a big week in City Council, where we finally voted to remove the carve-outs in our Welcoming City ordinance and end all collaboration between Chicago police and federal immigration enforcement. It's important to recognize it as a huge victory for grassroots movements: one that reminds us that when we fight, we win. You can read some background on this fight, along with other City Council updates, below. I also want to share with you updates about the progress to vaccinate Chicagoans and 33rd ward residents against Covid-19. Last week, Chicago began phase 1b of its vaccine rollout, whichContinue

The country inaugurated a new president this week, and a lot also happened here in the 33rd Ward. On Thursday, teachers are three of our neighborhood schools—Bateman, Hibbard, and Albany Park Multicultural Academy—held "teach-outs" to protest Chicago Public Schools' reopening plan. It was great to see some parents and community members come out to bring them coffee, extension cords and share their own struggles to keep their families safe during the pandemic. As the parent of a CPS kindergartener, I have seen firsthand the challenges of remote learning. But I continue to believe that we should be focusing on makingContinue
