33rd Ward Newsletter – May 19, 2023

Dear 33rd Ward neighbors,

In the midst of the asylum seekers’ arrival, our community has rallied again to support these new arrivals. Please read Mina Bloom and Alex Hernandez’s piece in Block Club Chicago earlier this week on our collective efforts to truly build communities of care. It’s beautiful, inspiring, and empowering to see this work happening throughout the 33rd Ward. During the darkest days of the pandemic, our community rallied together by building mutual aid efforts to secure and deliver masks to neighbors, support the unhoused, and those who couldn’t access food and much needed supplies. Re-engaging and reactivating these volunteer and rapid response networks to support the new arrivals in our area is exactly what we talk about when we nourish a caring community. I’m incredibly proud that what we’ve built in the last few weeks is being replicated all across the city.

There are still plenty of ways to get involved in these efforts if you would like to. You’re welcome to contact our office info@33rdward.org or by calling 773-840-7880.

33rd Ward Resurfacing Project Notice: Belmont, Kimball to Western

There is a resurfacing project happening on West Belmont Ave from North Kimball Ave to North Western Ave. This is a continuation of last year’s project. This work is part of the Chicago Department of Transportation’s Arterial Street Resurfacing – North Area Project, in the 33rd Ward.

Construction started earlier this week, and the work this year will include concrete flatwork, pavement patching, milling and paving the existing asphalt pavement, concrete medians, concrete bus pads, dedicated bike lanes and striping. Last years work focused on ADA sidewalk ramps and curb and gutter replacement.

During construction, temporary “No Parking” signs will be periodically installed as required for each activity listed above. These temporary signs will restrict parking during working hours, while adhering to rush hour restrictions, for the completion of the work. All work on this corridor this year is scheduled to be completed in August 2023.

33rd Ward Zoning Update

Our office expects that a zoning change application will soon be filed with the City Council’s Committee on Zoning for the property generally located at 3004-3006 W Belmont. CDZD partner Avondale Neighborhood Association has reviewed the proposal and provided feedback to the applicant. Community members can review the proposal here and submit feedback by visiting https://33rdward.org/zoning-proposals/.

Residents Can Get FREE Legal Advice from The Chicago Bar Association

Do you need legal help? Not sure if you need an attorney or just need a little advice? Attorneys with The Chicago Bar Association’s Call-A-Lawyer Program are ready and available to take calls from the public and offer brief legal advice on Saturday, May 20. The CBA is here to help as part of an ongoing legal public service program.

Calls will be accepted on May 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at (312) 554-2001.

Residents can call in and briefly explain their situation to an attorney, who will then work to suggest self-help strategies or provide advice to help resolve their issues. If callers need further legal services or have questions beyond the scope of the attorney’s practice area, they will be advised to contact the CBA Lawyer Referral Service during the week for a referral to an attorney in the appropriate area of law.

The CBA’s Lawyer Referral Service has more than 200 prescreened, qualified lawyers experienced in almost every area of law that offers their services to the public. When contacting the LRS during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, callers can be referred to attorneys practicing in numerous areas of law, including:

  • Domestic Relations – including divorce, custody, support, and other family law matters.
  • Personal Injury – including auto accidents, slip and falls, product liability, wrongful death, malpractice, and other types of injury cases.
  • Estate Planning – including will and trust drafting, probate, and will contest.
  • Real Estate – including buying or selling real estate, foreclosure defense and landlord/tenant issues.
  • Employment Law – including wrongful termination, harassment, and discrimination.

To reach a lawyer after normal business hours, the CBA offers an On-Call service that provides callers access to attorneys in three different areas of law. You can reach a lawyer 24/7 for help with criminal defense, personal injury, and family law matters by calling (312) 554-2001 or visiting www.lrs.chicagobar.org

Hearing Aid Research Study

Patient-Centered Hearing Trial at Northwestern University are recruiting participants for their hearing aid research study!

As you may be aware, hearing loss is very common among American adults. Untreated hearing loss has been linked to many other health conditions including cognitive decline. To improve access to hearing healthcare, the FDA has approved over-the-counter hearing aids. Their study is a national trial to understand how individuals can best select and fit their own hearing aids, purchased at a highly discounted rate of $650.

They are looking to recruit individuals between 50 and 79 years old who have not tried hearing aids before but are experiencing mild to moderate hearing difficulty. They have three sites up and running in the greater Chicago area on Northwestern’s Evanston campus, NMH downtown, and at a clinic in Palos Hills. For more information on how to join the study, call (877)-884-5242 or visit P-CHAT.soc.northwestern.edu.
