KNOW AND EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS IN CASE OF INTERACTION WITH ICE

ICE agents are allowed to lie to you and may threaten and intimidate you to give up your rights. Know your rights to defend your rights!

If ICE knocks on your door:

  • Do not open the door. Teach your family and children not to open the door.
  • ICE officers must have a warrant signed by a judge to enter your home. You can view sample warrants to familiarize yourself at www.bit.ly/ward33.

If you interact with ICE in any location, including your workplace:

  • You have the right to remain silent if questioned or arrested.
  • Remain calm and keep your hands where the officer can see them.
  • Do not provide false information, and do not run.
  • Do not discuss your immigration or citizenship status with the police or immigration agents.
  • State that you wish to speak with an attorney.
  • You do not need to sign any paperwork.

If you see ICE or witness an arrest:

  • Call the Family Support Hotline to report ICE activity so it can be verified.
  • Take note of the time, location or address, number of officers, and make/model/license plate of their vehicle.
  • DO NOT post unverified information on social media.
  • DO NOT interfere with an investigation or put yourself in harm’s way.
  • If you are able to speak with the person under arrest, ask their full name and birthday to communicate with lawyers at the Family Support Hotline.
  • Remind them of their rights: Remain silent, ask for a lawyer, do not sign papers.

If you are an employer or manager:

  • You have the right to remain silent if questioned or arrested. Ask officers to present a warrant. You can view sample warrants to familiarize yourself at www.bit.ly/ward33.
  • Place signs that mark a certain area as “Private,” where your employees can find refuge. Officers will need a warrant to enter private spaces.
  • Do not disclose information about your staff or their immigration status.
  • Call the Family Support Hotline to report ICE activity so it can be verified.
  • Take note of the time, location or address, number of officers, and make/model/license plate of their vehicle.

Ways you can prepare:

  • If arrested, you have the right to a phone call. Memorize the numbers of key family or friends, or the Family Support Hotline.
  • Create a Family Plan. Sample plans can be viewed at www.bit.ly/ward33.
  • Make sure your front door locks and that your building is secure. Call our office for help if your landlord will not cooperate: 773-840-7880.
  • Create a safety plan with your employer and co-workers.
