33rd Ward Newsletter – January 6, 2022

Happy New Year! Each new year is a gift of learning, growth, and hope. May your mind and soul be enriched with love, solidarity, and more in the days to come! We wish you a successful and prosperous 2023!

****

Last year we celebrated the groundbreaking for the Maria Elena Sifuentes apartment building, located at 3559 W Lawrence Ave. This was our first planned development (PD) delivered through our Community Driven Zoning Process. Through this project, we honor the legacy of Maria Elena Sifuentes, a beloved organizer in our community who fought fiercely for affordable housing and against displacement.

The project was funded through TIF and low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC). The apartments include 42 units for households earning 60% or below the area median income (AMI). An additional 8 units will be set aside for households at or below 80% of AMI. Click here to view a current AMI chart.

The application process for the apartments will open soon. If you would like to be contacted once the application is open, please contact our office via email at info@33rdward.org or call at 773-840-7880. In addition, Celadon Holdings and Communities United will host an application pick-up event on January 21st from 10 am-1 pm at Christ Lutheran Church located at 3253 W Wilson. Stay tuned for more details coming soon!

We are proud of the hard work, energy, and organization it took from our community to get to this point, and we are excited to see the results of all this hard work. We are grateful to Communities United, Celadon Holdings, Chicago Department of Housing, Commissioner Marisa Novara, Maria Elena’s family, my amazing staff, and all the people who helped to get us here.

COVID-19 and the flu has been on the rise lately in Chicago and we want to make sure you and your loved ones have access to resources to prevent illness. All households in Chicago are eligible to receive COVID and flu vaccinations in their home and these are available to those 6 months old and older. To receive this service you must schedule an appointment. Visit this link for more info. You can also register to receive up to 4 free home Covid tests this winter season. Click here to order them today!

The flu, Covid-19, and its variants can spread through droplets and aerosols. COVID-19 especially can last in the air for some time — even several hours — after transmission. N95 and KN95 masks, better ventilation, and air purification can help stop the spread of these potentially deadly and disabling diseases. The University of California at Davis has information about how to build a low-cost air purifier.

Shared Cost Sidewalk Program

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is an extremely popular voluntary program in which property owners share the cost of sidewalk repair with the City. Thousands of Chicagoans have been a part of this popular program, taking advantage of the low cost, exceptional value, and ease of participation.

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program cost per square foot charged to property owners is well below what a private contractor would charge. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities may qualify for a further discounted rate.

Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of participants is based on availability of funds. The program typically reaches capacity quickly, so you are encouraged to apply early. Please note that if you applied for the program in previous years, you must apply again in 2023 if you wish to be considered for the 2023 program.

Applications will only be accepted through the City’s 311 system by calling 311, through the City’s service request website, or through the free CHI311 mobile apps. The property owner’s contact information and the property address are required at the time of request.

Applications open on January 9, 2023 and will be available from 6 AM to 10 PM

Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF) Relaunch

IHDA has opened a new round of the Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF) to help homeowners who continue to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the trends they have identified during the first round of applications, they have doubled the maximum ILHAF grant amount from $30,000 to $60,000! This grant can cover overdue mortgage payments, property taxes, insurance, and association fees.

To date, ILHAF has provided $32.5 million to help 2,346 Illinois homeowners avoid foreclosure. Doubling their assistance amount to $60,000 will allow for them to help even more homeowners remain in their homes as they navigate inflation fears, changing market conditions, and continue to support the state’s overall recovery from the pandemic.

Households who need help with past-due mortgage payments and related expenses can apply for free assistance at www.IllinoisHousingHelp.org until Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. If you would like to learn more or share ILHAF information with your communities, you can find a downloadable ILHAF outreach toolkit in both English and Spanish at www.IllinoisHousingHelp.org/toolkit-mortgage.

If you have questions about ILHAF, please call at 1-866-ILHELP-1 (1-866-454-3571) or email them at HAFQuestions@ihda.org.
