33rd Ward Newsletter – December 16, 2022

As part of the 2021 budget, every single Alderperson received $100,000 to support community-based programs and organizations. I believe that how each Alderperson spent these city-funded microgrants says something about their values, their approach, their openness to collaboration, their boldness, and above all else a recognition of the needs of the communities they represent.

I decided to spend these funds in several ways: A cash assistance program run by HANA Center, funding for a mobile skatepark for youth, Israel Gift of Hope for a community-center, anti-gun violence efforts, and Ada Garcia, formerly of Anchor Baby, who worked with North Branch Works to launch a new small business incubator called Urban Markets. Urban Markets, located at 4432 N Kedzie, officially opened today and I was extremely fortunate to attend the grand opening.

Winter Snow Shoveling Program

With winter quickly approaching, we would like to get a head start with our annual Snow Shoveling Program. Each year this program matches snow shoveling volunteers with those in need of the service, i.e seniors and people with disabilities. If you are interested in volunteering or need the snow shoveling service, please use this link to ensure your spot in the program. Once you enroll, we will be in contact with you to ensure you have all the information you need for this program.

Currently, there is a push for a city-wide ordinance by Better Streets Chicago that seeks to establish sidewalk snow and ice removal become service for all citizens. Click here to read more.

Talking Trash with Eric Ramos

The other week the ward experienced a great deal of graffiti! However, we managed to take care of it very quickly. Arriving on the scene of an instance I put in the day before, I spoke to one of the graffiti blasters, Mike. He let me know that the spot we were at had 5 tickets on it alone! This is a wonderful thing. That means residents are using the 311 system to put these in. Fortunately in most cases, the streets & sans graffiti removal crews have a 24 hour turnaround or even LESS! Residents who feel empowered to call these things out show how we can all help to have a cleaner and safer ward. Thank you to those using the system and to everyone else, I encourage you to give it a shot. Or you’re always welcome to call the office or me for help.

Shared Cost Sidewalk Program

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is an extremely popular voluntary program in which property owners share the cost of sidewalk repair with the City. Thousands of Chicagoans have been a part of this popular program, taking advantage of the low cost, exceptional value, and ease of participation.

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program cost per square foot charged to property owners is well below what a private contractor would charge. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities may qualify for a further discounted rate.

Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of participants is based on availability of funds. The program typically reaches capacity quickly, so you are encouraged to apply early. Please note that if you applied for the program in previous years, you must apply again in 2023 if you wish to be considered for the 2023 program.

Applications will only be accepted through the City’s 311 system by calling 311, through the City’s service request website, or through the free CHI311 mobile apps. The property owner’s contact information and the property address are required at the time of request.

Applications open on January 9, 2023 and will be available from 6 AM to 10 PM

Free CTA Rides on New Year’s Eve

Like past years, CTA is offering free rides on buses and trains on New Year’s Eve, from 10 PM to 4 AM. This free service system allows CTA to help residents make it to their destination in a safe and reliable way. During the free-ride period, customers do not need to touch their Ventra or personal bankcards at rail station turnstiles or while boarding buses. Signs will be posted reminding customers of the free ride period on bus fareboxes. As in past years, no refunds will be issued if customers elect to touch their fare card or other form of payment on fare-card readers during the free-ride period.

For customers traveling to and from events around Chicago this New Year’s Eve outside the free ride period, the CTA recommends purchasing fares in advance, which will decrease travel times and avoid long lines at rail station vending machines. Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF) Relaunch

IHDA has opened a new round of the Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF) to help homeowners who continue to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the trends they have identified during the first round of applications, they have doubled the maximum ILHAF grant amount from $30,000 to $60,000! This grant can cover overdue mortgage payments, property taxes, insurance, and association fees.

To date, ILHAF has provided $32.5 million to help 2,346 Illinois homeowners avoid foreclosure. Doubling their assistance amount to $60,000 will allow for them to help even more homeowners remain in their homes as they navigate inflation fears, changing market conditions, and continue to support the state’s overall recovery from the pandemic.

Households who need help with past-due mortgage payments and related expenses can apply for free assistance at www.IllinoisHousingHelp.org until Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. If you would like to learn more or share ILHAF information with your communities, you can find a downloadable ILHAF outreach toolkit in both English and Spanish at www.IllinoisHousingHelp.org/toolkit-mortgage.
