33rd Ward Newsletter – May 14 – 20, 2021

This week, the CDC approved use of the two-dose Pfizer vaccine for youth ages 12 and older. Minors under 18 must still be accompanied by a parent or guardian, but youth ages 12 and up can now get vaccinated at city sites. Appointments are still recommended, but you can also go as a walk-in!

In light of this change, we are postponing the vaccination event planned for Horner Park on May 21. Working with our community partners at Heartland Health Centers, we had planned to offer the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. It’s important to emphasize that the J & J vaccine is both safe and effective, but there is still misinformation about this option in the community–we have more work to do to combat vaccine hesitancy. In our initial outreach for the event we also encountered much greater demand for nearby vaccination options for youth, and Pfizer is the only option approved for this age group at present.

Therefore, we are rescheduling our pop-up vaccination event for Friday, June 18th from 10am-6pm at Revolution Brewery, when we will offer the two-dose Pfizer vaccine to residents ages 12 and up. To request an appointment, or volunteer at the event, please sign up below.

In the meantime, we’re here to help you navigate other nearby options for getting yourself or your child vaccinated! Swedish Covenant Hospital near the 33rd ward is administering free Pfizer vaccines to any community member ages 12 and up. Our office has assisted hundreds of people in getting vaccine appointments scheduled at Swedish. If you still need the vaccine or want to vaccinate your child you can schedule an appointment directly through the NorthShore portal or call/email our office for assistance at 773-840-7880 or info@33rdward.org.

Erie Health’s location at 5215 N California Ave (Foster and California) is another great option for anyone 12 and over to get the Pfizer vaccine. This location takes walk-ins on Tues – Friday from 10 AM – 12 PM, or you can make an appointment.

And, Eid Mubarak to all celebrating! May the beauty and light of love and solidarity fill our homes and bring our communities together to create more joy and peace.
